Arranging the Best View: An Interview with Sarah Klein

Art Galleries do not arrange the art within on their own. It takes a certain finesse in the organization of the paintings that allows the art to speak for itself from the walls. That’s where Gallery Manager and Art Consultant Sarah Klein comes in. She was able to take a moment from her busy day to answer a few questions about what it means to manage J Klein Gallery.

Q: What does an average day look like as an art gallery manager? What are you primary responsibilities?
Sarah: Every day is different. I have to make sure the gallery looks inviting and the art is displayed properly. I’m constantly learning something new on a daily basis. I’m learning what works and what doesn’t and what is needed in order to improve and grow as a Gallery and a business.

Q: What is your method to arranging paintings and sculptures?
Sarah: The Gallery is a work of art in progress that I’m working on through experimentation. I find that if art is placed in a layout that makes sense, and creates a vibrational harmony with the placement of color and light, it can generate a positive response.

The intent is to create an experience that leaves people feeling happy and hopefully inspires them to take some of the happiness home with them.

Q: How does someone get into this line of work?
Sarah: I was offered an opportunity and I didn’t turn it down. I wasn’t planning on having to manage anything, I’ve always loved art. And as an artist myself, I have been fascinated with it my entire life. I’m also an aesthetic learner. So the hands on approach to getting into this was much more comprehensible for me. I was able to utilize the skill sets that I have, and found that most of them were useful in helping me to be able to understand the artistic approach to this business.

Q: What professional advice do you have for people displaying art in their homes or offices and how they can improve?
Sarah: Seeing that I don’t consider myself a professional; I cannot answer that question. I do know that it takes a precise understanding of composition and layout.

Q: What is one challenge of your position as Gallery Manager?
Sarah: It can be very stressful!
