Feeling and Tone in Art: A Discussion with Jim Klein

Abstract art seeks to break away from traditional representation of physical form. It is a style of art that explores the relationships of forms and colors, as opposed to more traditional art that represents the world in recognizable images.

Abstract art can also convey strong feelings and tone that, like most art, can vary from viewer to viewer. Artist and painter Jim Klein discussed one such work of fine art that effectively communicates tone in place of physical representation, “Far East“.

Q: Where was “Far East” created: the Farm Studio or at the J Klein Gallery in Scottsdale?
Jim: “Far East” was created at the Farm Studio in Colorado.

Q: What feeling or tone were you hoping the viewer would respond with when viewing “Far East”?
Jim: I typically like to allow the viewer to feel the painting and decide what it represents to them on their own, but personally, I always feel tremendously soothed when looking at “Far East”. It is such a calming piece of artwork and it would be perfect for someone with a home office or a stressful job. Studies have shown that displaying soothing art in high-stress areas has proven to alleviate stress and promote well-being.

Q: Your signature is placed differently in “Far East than in your other paintings. What inspired you to do this?
Jim: I was inspired by Japanese paintings, where you’ll find Kanji characters vertically. I thought it would be a creative call-back to that style of art and a nice homage.
