On a bright morning in Scottsdale, Jim set up his easel and paints, a few brushes and a fresh canvas outside the J Klein Gallery in the Art District. It was a perfect day to create in the Arizona sun. Passersby stopped now and again, watching him paint and enjoying the day. Some asked questions and we’ve compiled a few to share.
Q: Which do you enjoy more: painting outside or inside?
Jim: It all depends on the situation. Sometimes there are advantages to staying in the studio: bigger canvases, access to all my painting resources, lighting and temperature is controlled. Painting outside is limiting, but there is more of a realism in the moment that connects you to your art. Limitations can help your creativity flourish.
Q: Do you get distracted more easily outside then in the studio?
Jim: When I’m in the moment with working on a painting, there could be a crowd and I probably wouldn’t even notice. When I’m focusing on my canvas, that’s what becomes my entire reality; I just tune out everything else and paint.
Q: Do you enjoy having an audience watch you work or not so much?
Jim: Honestly, it depends on the day but everything is as it is. I just accept my surroundings as they are and enjoy my work.
Q: Is there anything to watch out for when you work outside?
Jim: Mainly the wind. If a breeze picks up, the canvas becomes a kite.
Q: What are the biggest differences between painting inside and painting outside?
Jim: I only bring some basic colors to work with so, interestingly, the color palettes end up being very different inside versus being outside. High textured paint is inconvenient and difficult to work with, so pieces tend to be less textured when made outside. I have more freedom to get wild while inside my studio, as I don’t have to worry about splashing paint on other people or cars or anything else. Being outside brings out a more restrained experience but that becomes an entirely different style. I enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to create in a new or different style, so I always have a good time of it.
